State tourney time

The Minnesota state men's softball tourney was held at Taft park in Richfield this weekend and Constance Free was there to compete. We eliminated 2 teams from the toruney and beat one other team on our way to a 3-2 finish. Lossing our 2nd game 10-7 made our road to the championship daunting as we then needed to win 7 straight games to claim the prize. We won our first game this morning even after spotting the other team 6 runs in the first inning. We then went on to shut them down and scored 11 runs. The next team just kept on hitting and we wilted in the heat ending on run with a 14-4 loss.

The play of the tourneyhad to have been the shot up the middle which Scott knocked down and Jim picked up and did a no look back flip to Steve at second.

On to the league playoffs which start Monday with out us but, we can play 3 straight the following Monday to claim our t-shirts!

11-1 may not be good enough

Well we finished our regular season tonight with a 9-0 win against Total Chaos. We started and ended our season with our only 2 shutouts of the year. Jim Blair turned 2 double plays and the rest of the team played great defense. If Epiphany wins though, they will be league champs with the 3 way tie with Cross of Christ. Tommie Casey broke out of a little slump with an in the park home run.

Our State tourney starts tomorrow in Richfield at Taft Park field #1 11:20 am. Stop by and enjoy the competition.

Great season guys!

Constance softball week 11

This week was a rematch with Horizon Silver and Troy let me know they were looking to beat us. We were off to our typical slow start and trailed in the game until we scored 5 in the bottom of the 4th to take a 9-5 lead. We mixed up the line up a little, having Steve Stelly start at pitcher and Adam Kirshner out in right center. Horizon used a 5th infielder the entire game although, that never really seemed to pay off with any outs. Scott had his signature triple and I had my first home run of the year (in the park). Pete has gone back to hitting from the right side and had a good night at the plate. Our defense was a little shaky so we need to clean that up by this weekends state tourney. We ended up winning 12-11 with the tieing run on first base. That puts us at 10-1, still 1/2 game behind Cross of Christ and tied with Epiphany. Friday night game against Total Chaos will determine how we end up in the standings.

Go Constance!

Header goal for the winner!

The district tourney started today at the National Sports Center in Blaine for our Minnesota Revolution U15C2 girls soccer team. The New Brighton Blaze were the draw and they struck first with a goal late in the first half. The days rain had flooded some of the fields but ours was just good and wet with quite a few puddles on the field. As the second half started off, New Brighton seemed to escape one close chance by the Rev aftr another. Our break came on a free kick by Sarah Dettinger with about 20 minutes left in the game, which the goalie slowed but didn't keep out of the net. We had several additonal chances on corner kicks but the game was still tied with 5 minutes left. We just pushed into another corner kick from the right side. Sarah Dettinger took the kick and Jenny Friday headed the ball into the net with just a few minutes to go for her second header goal of the season.

Overall the team is really playing and passing well and we could have scored on a couple of other opportunities. We now play again tomorrow at 1pm and then 7pm. When we win those games we will go to the state tourney next weekend.

Great game girls!

Coming through in the clutch!

I just taught my 3rd daughter how to drive a clutch. The first 2 daughters were prone to killing the engine and they took quite a while to get the launch down. Once they mastered that they have done very well and my oldest daughter still drives a clutch now 7 years later.

That brings me to todays fun. My youngest daughter had just the opposite issue as she peeled out on her first attempt to go forward. The neighbors had a good laugh once they realized it was her and not me. She also struggled finding third gear a couple of times, first gear at 40 never works real well. The cars behind us were none to forgiving and that frustated her even more.

Never had such a thrilling ride to the movie store before, but I have already survived this twice before so once more shouldn't be too bad.

Constance Softball week 10

Well the injury/vacation bug hit us last night as only 9 guys could play for us. We were up against Meadow Creek Red and they came ready to play. They scored 4 in the first and 5th along with 5 other runs to keep us on our heels all night. We were down by 4 going into the bottom of the 5th inning. Scott's signature triple had eluded him all game. Our first 2 batters were retired, when we broke out with 8 consecutive hits, capped off with my go ahead single between the pitcher's legs. We scored 6 times to take the lead and shut out Meadow Creek Red in the the top of the 6th to win 15-13. Not pretty but a great example of why we are  now 9-1, we simply don't give up.

Our new lefty Pete (just switched to left handed) went 4 for 4 and I had one of my better games going 3 for 4 includong a triple I stratched into a double. Both Scott and Jeromy had their shiny new candy apple red Miken bats, which most of the team tried and liked. 2 more games next week then, onto the State tourney the 25th-27th in Richfield.

Great game Constance!

35W Mississippi River bridge span

As Maxwell Smart might say "Missed it by that much!" That is how close the span is from being completed for the Nrthbound lanes. They are claiming to have both spans complete yet this month and hope to have i-35W open again shortly after Labor Day. We heard a report that the cables on Big Ben (the crane lifting the segments up to the bridge) snapped yesterday, slowing progress alittle. Luckily they weren't lifting a segment at the time.

Here are a few shots we took on a long bike ride to Minneapolis and back We also stopped for dinner at the "Old Spaghetti Factory" in downtown for dinner.

A link to our route.

MN Rev U15C2 soccer update

Hey!!!! Nice job last night. That win put our team in third place in our division as of today. If we win against Two Harbors next week, pending their results, we could potentially end up in second place. Nice work team!!!

The girls also enjoyed DQ, thanks to Coach Dettinger and Jenny Friday's header goal in the Burnsville Tourney. The goal was set up by a great corner kick from Sarah Dettinger who also scored in the first game.MN Rev U15C2 2008

Here is the link to the rest of team photos, enjoy! Thanks Judy and Cheryl.

I-35W River Bridge update

Minnesota Deparment of Transportation - Project Updates
I-35W Bridge over the Mississippi
June 30, 2008
Greetings!

Amy Barrett, Public Information Officer, at (612) 236-6901 or via e-mail at abarrett@flatironcorp.com.

Highway Paving to Begin This Week

Aerial view of progress on north side of bridge

Roadway crews will begin paving sections of the I-35W highway north of the river this week. Starting tonight (June 30), crews will begin paving the highway between University Avenue and Second Street Southeast (the area in the foreground of the photo above).  By next week, paving is expected to continue between University Avenue and Fourth Street Southeast.

Aerial view of main span

Meanwhile, the barge crane continues installing pre-cast segments for the northbound and southbound spans of the I-35W Bridge across the Mississippi (see photo above). Of the 120 total segments needed for the main span, 80 already are in place, and approximately 100 will be installed by the end of the week, including all 60 of the segments for the northbound half of the bridge.

When the cantilevers extending from both sides of the river are complete, there will be a gap of about 7 feet between them and a difference in elevation of no more than 6 inches. Crews will complete the main span with two "closure pours" of cast-in-place concrete. The closure pour for the northbound side of the bridge is scheduled for the week of July 7, and the southbound side will be closed about 10 days later.

Construction Update

Concrete segments stored on old highway

Other construction activities scheduled for the week of June 30 include:

  • Grading and other roadwork in preparation for paving the highway from Washington Avenue (the road with cars on it in the photo above) to the abutment wall on the south end of the bridge (to the right of the area shown above). Continuing to paint Span 1 on the north side of the river.
  • Continuing to pour the concrete for Span 4, which connects Pier 4 to Abutment 5 on the north side of the river.
  • Installing fencing along the highway from University Avenue to Fourth Street Southeast.

Potential Noise Impacts

  • As crews pave the roadway on the north side of the project, backup alarms may be increasingly noticeable in that area, especially at night.
  • Following paving, crews will cut expansion joints in the concrete when it is cured. This work involves saws that will create noise intermittently during the day and at night.
  • Toward the end of the week, crews will need to remove sheet pile near the new retaining wall along the exit ramp from northbound I-35W to University Avenue. This work will take approximately two days to complete and will require the use of equipment that causes noise and vibrations. Because this work can be loud, it will only be done during the day, between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m.

Potential Traffic Impacts

As the project progresses, residents and commuters may encounter activities that will affect traffic in the area. In particular:

  • During roadway paving operations, concrete trucks will travel from the concrete plant on 35W south of Washington Avenue through the project site and up the north bound ramp to Washington Avenue. Trucks will go left on Washington Avenue to 19th Avenue, then across the 10th Avenue bridge to the north side of the project. Most of this activity will take place at night. There will be traffic control at the top of the ramp at Washington Avenue.
  • Crews will periodically close 13th Avenue South from the casting yard entrance to West River Parkway as they transport the last of the pre-cast segments to the river. Hauling operations will take place between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. intermittently until the end of the week. The road will close for up to 10 minutes each time a segment is moved.
  • Construction traffic will continue in the vicinity of the site. Some of the streets affected include Second Street Southeast (between 11th Avenue Southeast and Sixth Avenue Southeast), First Street South, Second Street South (between 13th Avenue South and 11th Avenue South), 19th Avenue South and Bluff Street.
  • Due to large crowds attending Sidewalk Superintendent Talks, the bike lane on the west side of the 10th Avenue Bridge will be closed from 11 a.m. until noon on Saturdays until further notice in an effort to ensure the safety of everyone using the bridge. Signs are posted at each end of the bridge noting the restriction. Bikes and pedestrians should use the east side of the bridge between 11 a.m. and noon on Saturdays.

Potential Light Impacts

Crews are working night shifts seven days a week on both sides of the river. Lights and construction traffic may be noticeable between 5:30 p.m. and 4 a.m.
