Coon Rapids Tornado

twister damage

I just witnessed the tornado that went through Coon Rapids MN. I was in my back yard weed whipping and it was getting very dark and eerily calm. I stopped for a minute, looked straight up and saw a streak of green across the sky. I looked out at the southern horizon and saw clouds moving up towards the storm. My neighbor ws on his deck and asked if he just saw a tornado. He said yes, so my wife said to get in the house.

My sister called from up North and asked if we were ok. We had no damage at the time and she thought we should check on my Mom's townhome. She was out of town for the weekend for a wedding. On the way over there we saw the path  of the damage starting just south of 125th and heading East-southeast. My mom's house was fine. I knew my wife's friend Kathy lived near the path so we drove over to check out there home. Most every tree in their yard was down with a few on the home.

Just then a 2nd wave came through dumping marble to dime size hail. We drove to a nearby gas station to get under the awning. The truck may have taken some damge to the roof. I shot a few photos of the hail and the storm cloud after it calmed down.

Coon Rapids Dam Ride

Our bike ride tonight started with a trip to the license center. Needed tabs for the truck, camper, fishing license, and renew my license. Say cheese. Then we decided to continue on the Coon Rapids Dam. Down Foley Blvd. to East River Road, then past Adams Elementary. From there we went under the 610 bridge over the Missiissippi River up stream to the dam. I snapped a few photos of the water coming over the dam. The river is still high from the spring run off, even though we haven't any rain in the past few weeks. The ride was great until I punctured my tube on the way home. My wife continued on and came back and picked me up.

Here are some photos by the dam.

Constance softball

This week we scored our first 7 batters in the first inning, only to give Family of Christ Red 6 back. We kept up the pressure though by scoring 25 runs and held them to 11 to win in 6. Pete Grover's hot bat continued as did Scott Stroyny's. Steady but not great defense on our part kept Red in check. They really hit the ball well through out their lineup. Next week we are off for Memorial Day.

Keep on hitting guys!

Bike ride in a dust storm?

My wife and I headed out for our usual Bunker Hills Park bike ride. The skies were partly cloudy and a few rain drops had fallen but we saw a clearing and decided to go. After crossing Bunker Lake on the bridge we turned back to the west. The sky was black but mostly to the North. I though we could finish our run so we kept on our route. Once we reached the entrance of the park the black sky was still North and appeared like we were OK. The trail heads back to the North side of the park and we could see it raining in the distance.

Riding West on Bunker Lake Blvd we turned into the County maintenance yard and went past the Sheriffs station. I could hear what sounded like a jet over head and it was calm on the ground. As we turned South on Hanson, we looked North and saw a wall of dust coming our way. Luckily the wind was now at our back as it quickly hit 60 MPH. 3 seconds later I was over come by the dust cloud and didn't dare look back. As I approached 133rd to cross Hanson, I could barely see my wife or whether any traffic was coming. Once across I escaped the dust storm and kept riding hard, not knowing what was next. My wife wasn't so lucky crossing Hanson and had to wait for a clearing. By the time we arrived home a few minutes later, all was calm again.

Meadow Creek Girls HS softball

Meadow Creek went 1-1 today in the sections at Mendkota Park and will play again on Tuesday night at Visitation. They beat West Lutheran in the 2nd game to keep their season going. They won 7-4 with West threatening in the bottom of the 7th.  Kelly Strandlund pitched great in both games. Alyssa Burg and Katie Minks both had triples and Kristina Domino gunned down 2 runners and made a great tag at the plate. Here is the team photo.

Bunker Bike ride

Finally went out for a bike ride today. It has been a few weeks since I have been out. We took the new tunnel under Hanson Blvd. and then followed Hanson North to Bunker Lake Blvd. The road construction in the area made us ride a little to close to traffic for about a mile. Once we passed the construction, we entered Bunker Park on some of the best trails in the state. The trail takes you across Bunker Lake on a floating bridge. Rolling terrain makes this ride a little more challenging than the rail bed trails that are all over.

I didn't see the sand hill cranes on this trip, they seem to be around in the early this spring. Their sound is very unique and you can hear it from quite a distance. Plenty of song birds though to listen to on the trip.  The weather was perfect with temps in the low 60's and the sun on the way down.

I also learned to text while riding as my daughter was requesting ice cream. So I stopped at the Festival in Andover Station and grabbed 2 half gallons. 12 miles later I enjoyed some ice sream and listened to the Twins with my wife Patti.

I-35W Bridge over the Mississippi

Minnesota Deparment of Transportation - Project Updates I-35W Bridge over the Mississippi May 13, 2008 Greetings! If you have questions, please do not reply directly to this email. Contact Amy Barrett, Public Information Officer, at (612) 236-6901 or via e-mail at abarrett@flatironcorp.com. Road Bed on Approach Spans Poured Pouring Road Bed Crews have begun pouring concrete for the road beds of the approach spans on the south side of the river on the I-35W Bridge. Half of the northbound approach span was poured last Thursday and the first southbound half was poured Sunday afternoon. Crews anticipate pouring concrete for the remaining northbound road bed on the south approach span sometime this week. Construction Update Other work scheduled for the week includes: Construction of the pre-cast concrete segments in the casting yard. As of Monday, 94 of the necessary 120 segments have been built. Crews plan to build another nine this week. Moving Segment * Hauling the pre-cast segments from the casting yard to Bohemian Flats. Workers began hauling segments late last week, and will continue this week. As of Monday, 14 segments have been hauled. Throughout the week, crews expect to haul approximately 6 segments each day. Each of the segments weighs between 150 and 200 tons. Crews will periodically close 13th Avenue South from the casting yard entrance to West River Parkway as they transport pre-cast segments to the river. Hauling operations will take place between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., seven days a week for up to five weeks. The road will close for up to 10 minutes each time a segment is moved. * Pouring concrete for the bottoms and sides of the approach spans on the north side of the river. Area residents and motorists will experience traffic delays as well as some noise and light disruptions in the coming weeks. Potential Noise and Light Impacts Beginning as early as May 20, crews will begin demolishing the road bed on I-35W on the north end of the casting yard. This work will occur around the clock and could last as long as four weeks. Crews are working night shifts seven days a week on both sides of the river as well as in the casting yard. Lights and construction traffic may be noticeable between 5:30 p.m. and 4 a.m. Potential Traffic Impacts 13th Avenue South to be Closed During Hauling Operations - Hauling will run along 13th Avenue South and South Second Street to the river's edge on the south side of the construction site (using the entrance at 13th Avenue South and West River Parkway). Flaggers will be present while hauling is in progress, and traffic attendants will be posted at all driveways along the haul route. Truck Traffic - There will be increased construction traffic in the vicinity of the site. Some of the streets affected include: Second Street Southeast east to 11th Avenue Southeast; Second Street Southeast to Sixth Avenue Southeast, First Street South and 19th Avenue South, Bluff Street south to 13th Avenue South, Second Street South west to 11th Avenue South. Sidewalk/lane closures at Washington and University - The sidewalk on the north side of Washington Avenue may be closed between Seven Corners and 12th Avenue South while crews redo the curb cuts at the corners. Occasional lane closures may also be necessary during this phase of construction. Similar work will take place on University Avenue between Eighth and 10th avenues SE starting in mid-May. Street Closures Needed at 14th Avenue South and First Street South - To allow utility relocation and widening of I-35W northbound, 14th Avenue South and First Street South (near the Seven Corners Apartments) are temporarily closed. Street parking on Second Street South and 14th Avenue is restricted to allow two-way traffic along Second Street South from 19th Avenue to the closure. 10th Avenue Bike Lane Closed - The bike lane on the west side of the 10th Avenue Bridge will be closed until further notice from 11 a.m. until noon on Saturdays--when the weekly Sidewalk Talks are in progress--to ensure the safety of everyone using the bridge. The City of Minneapolis has posted signs noting the restriction at each end of the bridge. Bikes and pedestrians are urged to use the lane on the east side of the bridge between 11 a.m. and noon. Constance softball

WOW! what a game. Cross of Christ came into to the game having finished a game behind us last year and the only tie we had last year. They started out with 6 runs in the first inning but we battled back with 4. We took a 1 rn lead in the second then we battled back and forth to a 15-11 victory. Big hits came from Jim Blair's in the park home run, Pete Grover shot off the 300 foot fence and Scott Stroyny's triple. Scott finally gave up his first runs of the season tonight but still kept his perfect record intact. We are off to a great start and will need to keep it going as their are still 3 undefeated teams.

Keep on hitting Constance!
